Electrochemical energy storage (EES) systems are playing a transformative role in enabling the global shift toward renewable energy and sustainable mobility. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advances in EES technologies, including lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), solid-state batteries, redox flow batteries, and emerging next-generation systems such as sodium-ion and zinc-air batteries. It further examines key challenges in material stability, energy density, cost, and scalability, while highlighting innovations in nanostructured electrodes and solid electrolytes. The research emphasizes the critical role of electrochemical performance modeling, recycling strategies, and green chemistry in optimizing battery lifecycle. The implications for grid storage, electric vehicles, and off-grid energy access are critically analyzed, particularly in the context of Pakistan's growing energy demands and renewable transition roadmap.
