Abstract

Smart Waste Management Systems (SWMS) have emerged as a transformative solution to the growing global challenge of waste disposal and environmental sustainability. This article explores the pivotal role of engineering disciplines—environmental, civil, electrical, and mechanical—in the design, development, and deployment of smart waste management technologies. Emphasis is placed on IoT-enabled waste monitoring, automated collection systems, waste segregation, and data-driven decision-making processes. The article further discusses engineering challenges and innovations in optimizing resource use, reducing operational costs, and minimizing environmental impact within the Pakistani context. Two illustrative graphs visualize trends in smart waste technology adoption and efficiency improvements. The study concludes with future recommendations to enhance smart waste management through interdisciplinary engineering collaboration.
