Binocular Disparity Amplification for Improved Depth Perception in Optical See-Through Augmented Reality

Depth underestimation is commonly observed in optical see-through augmented reality (OST-AR) systems due to vergence–accommodation mismatch and limited binocular disparity cues. This study proposes a disparity amplification model that adaptively scales virtual object disparity relative to estimated fixation distance. Thirty-six participants performed a 3D alignment task under three rendering conditions: baseline OST rendering, fixed disparity scaling, and adaptive disparity amplification. Absolute depth estimation error decreased from 18.4 mm (baseline) to 9.7 mm under adaptive amplification (47.3% improvement, p < 0.01). Task completion time was reduced by 21.6%, and subjective depth clarity ratings increased from 3.1 to 4.4 on a 5-point Likert scale. The findings indicate that controlled disparity amplification enhances depth accuracy and usability in OST-AR task scenarios.
